A rustic wooden trough with a cucumber espalier

Climbing cucumbers provide visually appealing planting designs in espalier planting. Aztecs used amaranth as a vegetable of at some point in time. The climbing cucumber creates a background for a cheerful plant grouping.

Plants for an 80cm wooden trough:

  • 1 tall growing salad cucumber Bella

  • 1 pepper Pusztagold

  • 1 pepino melon

  • 2-3 climbing mange-tout

  • 1 oyster plant ( rare to find blue plant)

  • 1 violet amaranth

  • 1 lobelia

Plant the cucumber at the back and train it up the espalier. Set the potter plant in frost and presto you have a unique ancient design.

A colourful ensemble in a stylish wooden tub

The tall-growing dill plant dominates these designs with its special leaves and flowers. This design will be modified as the blue violet flowers of the artichoke begin to take up more room at the end of summer.

Plants for a tub diameter of 30cm

  • 2 seed pots each having 20 weedlings of dill

  • 1 artichoke green globe

  • 1 low growing pepper Feshual with yellow fruit

  • 1 marjoram (Marjoram hortensis)

  • 1 lobelia (lobelia erinus)

The dill should be placed at the rear while the front is left vacant for the artichoke and the pepper. Plant the marjoram and summer flowers in a manner that allows them to hang over the edge of tub.

Spinach beet in a rustic willow basket

Spinach can dominate the whole container if left unchecked. It has enormous leaves that take up a lot of space. However if planted with other plants it will remain small. Bronze fennel and mange-tout create a classy support to it.

Plants for a basket with a diameter of 40cm

  • 1 white stalked spinach beet walliser

  • 1 red stalked spinach beet feurio

  • 1 fennel bronzefenchel

  • 5-6 mange-tout seedlings rheinische

  • 2 Thymphylla tenuiloba (golden fleck)

  • 1 blue ornamental sage (salvia farinacea)

The spinach beet should be planted together with the other plants in the willow basket at the end of spring.

A hanging garden with cherry tomatoes

This design looks very classy, a shade of green, red and white dangle in rays of sunlight. It also provides formula for a tasty meal.

Plants for a hanging container with a diameter of 25cm:

  • 1 balcony tomato tumbler

  • 1 basil Rothaut

  • 1 white flowering rosemary ( Rosmarinus officinalis)

Buy the plants in the last month of spring and spread them evenly in the container. Ensure that the hanging basket is balanced properly.
