What are multi Scented Pelargonium flowers? and the seasons that they produce good scents

Pelargoniums are in high demand because of their flower producing abilities, colours and marvelous perfume. Smaller varieties are in even more demand as well as wild scented species of Pelargonium. Pelargoniums come from wild forms of their hybrids P. graveolens, P.crispum, P x fragrans and P radens. They have a wide variety of scents and marked leaves. Plant Pelargoniums that have the same scent in a container which allows them to mix together to create one huge scented bush.

Pelargonium scents

Different scents continue to appear as long as new hybrids are created. There are:

  • Fruity aromas such as lemon (P.Citronella, P.mabel grey) orange (P.Prince of orange), apple (P.odoratissimum) pineapple, apricot, coconut and peach.

  • Flowery perfumes such as roses (P.Attar of Roses)

  • Spicy odors like mint (P.charity, P chocolate' Tomentosum), nutmeg (P x fragrans)

  • Resinous scents like cedar elderberry and pine ( P.old spice) which exudes a mixed pine-and-apple fragrance.

Year-round scent

Most fragrant flowers produce most scents during the summer while late flowering plants only release there scents in autumn. A good balcony should not look dull during the remaining seasons. Plant ever greens which have aroma producing foliage, allowing your balcony to have aroma even during the flowerless season. Ever greens that can be used include herbs such as cotton lavender.

All-season plants

Ever green dwarfs conifers such as cypress allow you to have a beautiful flower box throughout the year. Do not space the plants too close together to allow room to place flower scented plants such as daffodil (Narcissus), sweet violet (Viola odorate), lily of the valley and Phlox in-between the permanent plants.

Colourful autumn magic

The late flowers in mid-autumn will create a splash of colour on the balcony or patio. Scented geraniums, bergamont and spicy plants in pots will release marvelous sweet fragrances, especially if they are propagated in sunny, warm positions close to the house wall.

Plants such as angels' trumpets, scented everlasting pea and Pern only release perfume when they are in a sheltered environment. The berries that are produced by the scented flowers attract birds and some are tasty when consumed with ice-cream. However do not consume berries that you are not sure of as some of them will be toxic. Do not consume berries produced by Honeysuckle , Viburnum or lily-of-the-valley. Keep young children away from these plants or do not grow them at all.

Aromatic herbs should be over wintered in a bright cool position in the home.
