Herbs Planted In Cracks

Cracks between the pathway are a great area to plant herbs. Thyme species, in particular, are a very good herb to plant here. Lemon Thyme and Wild Thyme are good examples that should thrive in cracks like these. This also creates an amazing perfumed scent when you happen to disturb one of these herbs.

Herb Stairs

Stairs planted with the herb Thyme, which lead out to a sunny area, causes great forgetfulness as you will start to daydream like you will not believe. Lady's Mantle is also another superb herb to plant in or on the steps. Just be careful that you make sure the Thyme will get enough sun (As Thyme prefer sunny areas) and the Lady's Mantle gets enough shade (As Lady's Mantle prefers semi-shady areas).

A Raised Bed Full Of Herbs

A raised bed edged with stones provides the exact habitat the herb species like. It would be wise to plant low-growing herbs like Rosemary or Stonecrop around the edge of the bed.

Designing With Herbs

Natural Rocks Or Stones

Pieces of natural occurring rocks or stones do not need a large area to make partners with the herbs that love warm areas. An entire herb collection or just a Lavender bush spread out wonderfully.

The Drystone Wall

Pile up natural stones on a concrete foundation and from there plant the herbs in the cracks between the stones. Drystone walls are very suitable for putting around a patio. These are good places to grow herbs like Thyme, Lavender, Rosemary, Savory and Oregano.

Herb Spirals

Natural stones are laid in courses in the same way as they would be in a Drystone wall. A herb spiral is a good small area where an entire herb community can grow in first class conditions. It will sort of look out of place though if it is built out of very large stones. The herb spiral should blend well with its surroundings.
