Herbs In Cooking

Once you have done all the hard work of gardening and harvesting and preparing your herbs you can finally sit down and enjoy them. Salads are enhanced by the input of herbs to add flavour, it also an advantage that herbs (When cooked or added to anything) contain many minerals and vitamins. The following is a list of important rules for using herbs in cooking or preparing food.

  • Only use the herbs that you know about.

  • Always prepare herbs straight after you have picked them.

  • Never chop herbs too finely as they will loose important etheric oils.

  • Never have too many healing herbs that contain effective substances.

  • Herbal teas should only ever be used on a short-term basis, never use them for more than 4 weeks or more than 4 times daily.

  • Pregnant woman should be very careful on their consumption of herbs.

Recipes And Tips When Cooking With Herbs

  • Mint, Salad Burnet and Lemon Balm should be finely cut and mixed in with the salad.

  • The leaves of the Chervil herb gives salad a wonderful flavour.

  • If you would like to make your salad look exotic, try using the Oyster plant. When added to a salad with strips of smoked salmon and garnish it is quite exquisite.

  • Herb Quark ... Add some finely chopped Shallot herbs.

  • Herb soups ... Can be a great meal, Chervil is particularly deliscious, although other herbs are tasty as well.

  • Recipe ... 1 or 2 Shallots lightly cooked in butter, and a hot vegetable stock, chopped herbs and allow to boil briefly. Add cream for extra enhancement.

Desert Herbs

Some very nice deserts can be combined with different herb combinations herbs to make a superb after meal. There are quite a lot of "sweet herbs" that can be used in deserts. Desert herbs include the likes of the following; Lemon Balm, Angelica, Basil and sweet Cicely.

  • Chopped Mint mixed with Cherry jam.

  • Basil in Blackberry jelly.

  • Hyssop with Peach jam.
