Propagating Clematis by dividing them and sowing a Clematis seed
Clematis such as Clematis integrifolia (which is a herbaceous perennial clematis) can be propagated in this manner. This involves dividing the rootstock into 2 or more parts. Dig out the root in the autumn and divide it into 2 or 3 sections carefully without breaking it down. The parts will then be planted as separate individual plants.
Taking cuttings
It is quiet common to propagate clematis form cuttings. Clematis alpine, Clematis macropetala and Clematis Montana can be successfully propagated from cutting. This is because these varieties root easily.
Method
-
Cut off a mature woody clematis shoot in the last month of spring or first month of summer.
-
Split this up by cutting the shoot diagonally above a pair of leaves.
-
The volume of foliage can be reduced by cutting off a single leaf completely and getting rid of those parts of the second one that would later lie on the soil surface.
-
Stand the cutting in water for a short time
-
Fill a clay pot with planting compost made of equal parts of peat and sand and press down gently.
-
Add the cutting into compost to the point where the leaves show
-
Irrigate and place a transparent plastic bag over the pot use of rooting powder catalyses root development
-
Stand the pot in a bright and warm position (22`C being best). The cutting should have rooted after 4-8 weeks.
-
Plant the young plants in a pot which is not too large and filled with high quality ,fertilized garden soil mixed with peat.
Sowing seed
This method will require seed tray or pots and good quality seeding compost
1. harvest ripe seed heads as soon as they are easy to remove and get rid of the hairs.
2. fill the pots or seed trays with seeding compost and evenly spread the seeds over the compost.
3. cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost and irrigate the clematis with a spray attachment.
its good sowing practice to place the pots in a cold frame or propagator in a bright position until they germinate. Ensure that the compost does not become dry. When the seed has germinated, stand the pots or propagator in a brighter position which is aerated.
When the young plants are about 3cm tall, prink them into smaller pots. Provide the young plants with climbing aids to help them grow well.
