It is easy to be seduced by the beautiful glowing colours of the flowers and fascinating shapes of the Cactus. The following is a list of common Cactus species I will also be describing the best methods to take care of each specie:

  • Astrophytum ... In loose mineral soil with good fertilization. Astrophytum species will be ready to flower even as very young plants. Waterlogging must be strictly avoided.

  • Brasilicactus ... A very simple plant to maintain, water well during the Summer, likes humus rich soil.

  •  Cephalocereus ... Place the neck of the roots in coarse permeable soil with some humus content. Fertilize well. In the Summer occasionally provide the plant with some humid heat, no waterlogging and frequent misting is good.

  • Cleistocactus ... Water well during the Summer, grow it only on its rootstock.

  • Coryphantha ... With the correct care they flourish and produce many flowers.

  • Dolichothele ... Soil must be water-permeable and must contain humus. A bright and warm position should be found for this plant in Summer.

  • Echinocactus ... In the Summer it must be watered and fertilized well in a hot and sunny position. In Winter the temperature should be around 10 degrees Celsius with minimum watering.

  • Echinocereus ... Mineral soil. In Summer- Outside, sunny area with plenty of watering. Misting during evening hours. No more watering should be done from the end of the first month in Autumn.

  • Echinofossulocactus ...  Water-permeable humus rich soil is favoured. Fertilize and water well during the Summer. Also flourishes in bright positions with little sunlight.

  • Eriocactus ... Nutritious, good permeability, slightly humus containing soil is preferred. In Summer ... constant moisture with great heat in a semi-shady position is best.

  • Ferocactus ... Nutrient rich, water-permeable soil is best. Sunny position and water well in Summer.

  • Gymnocalycium ... Do not have to be exposed to full sunlight. Water well during the Summer. If sheltered from the rain they may also be kept outside.
