A Brief History Of The Cactus
The History Of The Cactus
The history of the Cactus did not start until America was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Columbus was the earliest known European to see the Cactus. Historians are sure that Columbus even brought a few of these desert dwelling plants back from America. Later on other explorers started to bring Cacti back from the Americas to their home countries.
Cactus collecting reached an all time peak during the early parts of the Victorian Era. This was very popular until Palms, Lilies and Orchids began to take over. As Cacti began to fade away, valuable collections were forgotten about and many rare plants were lost.
After the end of the first world war, a campaign of environmental exploitation began in the home ranges of the Cactus. Without any valuable Cactus well-being information, Cacti hunters started to bring a huge amount of Cacti back to Europe where most of the plants died very quickly. Nurseries had been involved in selling Succulents since 1900, but they usually dealt with exotic and imported Cactus species.
Today in the present times collecting Cacti is well organized both privately and through public societies, these can be found all over the world!
There are many species of Cactus which can be found all over the globe for people to enjoy. They are a hardy plant and quite spectacular when flowering, even when the Cactus is not in flower they are an amazing plant species and a lot has been and will be said about these desert dwelling succulents.
Of the species of Cacti they are all separated by some striking features, whether their spines look like daggers or fish hooks, they can all hold their own in the way of the Floral Kingdom.
Cacti, which are generally quite tough customers, seem to follow their own rules in a lot of aspects. If you are ever wishing to purchase Cacti or a Cactus or any other Succulent for that matter, it is advised that you should forget everything you know about all other plants and plant species. Cactus plants that are in flower for example, are by no means a good guarantee of you keeping them in good health and preventing your Cactus from diseases. And if you buy Cacti in winter you might just have to prepare yourself for a huge disappointment.
